BRICS Summit ‘to set new world order’ - analyst
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
An analyst believes the declaration made at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg will set the tone for the new global order.
The remarks by David Monyae, the Co-Director of University of Johannesburg-based Centre for Africa-China Studies, follow BRICS' decision to invite six more nations to join the group as members from January
Half of them are oil-producing countries.
Monyae says the BRICS bloc will move from a small elite group, to a more powerful one.
"Iran for instance is a member and Iran is under enormous sanctions from western countries, but within the BRICS I think Iran will be somehow protected by BRICS countries.
"Therefore, all the issues of United States and western countries weaponising ambitions of the dollar, weaponising using sanctions might come to an end."
Monyane says the summit’s declarations will set a new tone for the new global order.
"I must admit that I never thought we would be here. It has gone beyond my expectation. for the African continent, I expected only one country to make it. Seeing President Cyril Ramaphosa has really pushed for Ethiopia as an additional member, Now we have three countries sitting in BRICS. That is massive.”
Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, the UAE and Ethiopia will join the current five BRICS members in January 2024.
