Army rations from around the world
Updated | By Shayling Guy
Be thankful for that boring desk lunch - when the guardians of the planet are out there keeping the peace, they're chowing down on some cutting edge meals that will probably survive the apocalypse! From self heating pouches that require no flame, to deer pate and chicken tikka masala. There are also warnings on some chocolates that they could double as laxatives! There's definitely room for some technological advancement.
South Africa:
The standard issue for the South African army rat-pack comes with cereal, soup, two cans of tinned food, energy bars, biscuits, fire tablets, matches, coffee, sugar and creamer, some condiments, crackers, sweets and chewing gum. Enough for a day, but can be rationed out in extreme survival cases.
Estonia:
Stuffed peppers. Chicken-meat pâté. Smoked sprats. Liver sausage with potatoes. Crispbreads. Halva with vanilla. Muesli. Fruit pocket. Honey.
Spain:
Cans of green beans and ham. Squid in vegetable oil. Pate. Sachet of powdered vegetable soup. Peach syrup and crackers. Disposable heater with matches and fuel tabs. Vitamin C, glucose, water purification and rehydration tablets.
Germany;
Just-add-water sachets of grapefruit and juice powder. Italian biscotti. Liver sausage spread. Rye Bread. Goulash with potatoes. Sour cherry and apricot jams for breakfast.
Australia:
Vegemite. Jam sandwich biscuits. Tube of sweetened condensed milk. Fonterra processed cheddar cheese. Meatballs and chili tuna pasta.
France:
Deer pâté. Cassoulet with duck confit. Creole-style pork. Crème chocolate pudding. Coffee and flavored drink powded. Muesli. Dupont d’Isigny caramel. Disposable heater.
Italy:
A breakfast shot of 40% alcohol cordiale (aka breakfast of champions). Powdered cappuccino. Biscotti. Pasta. Bean soup. Canned turkey. Rice salad. Power sport bar. Canned fruit salad. Muesli chocolate bar. Disposable camping stove.
UK:
Kenco coffee. Mini bottle of Tabasco. Chicken tikka masala. Vegetarian pasta. Pork and beans. Trail mix. Apple “fruit pocket” snacks. Packets of Polos. Teabags.
US:
Almond poppy seed pound cake. Cranberries. Non-alcoholic apple cider. Peanut butter and crackers. Pasta with vegetable crumbles in spicy tomato sauce. Just-add-water powder to heat up plastic meal pouch.
Pretty intruiging stuff, don't you think? Certainly far from fine-dining though. Were you ever in the armed forces? Do you remember what your rations contained? Drop us a comment below.
