Angelique Gerber speaks out against gender-based violence following BOXOP victory
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
This was the first instalment of BOXOP to present a ladies' boxing match. In a match against singer Tasché Burger, Angelique Gerber walked away victorious!
The much-anticipated fight on Saturday night between two of South Africa’s leading female celebrities kept a live audience on the edge of their seats at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Angelique Gerber, by unanimous decision, won on points and was crowned champion of BOXOP Edition Three. This was the first instalment in the series to present a ladies' boxing match as the headline feature.
Streamed nationwide and around the world, the ‘showdown of the year’ in the Women’s Super-Featherweight Division was contested over four rounds of one and half minutes each. Every second was a nail-biter, the fight seesawed like a rollercoaster until the bell sounded at the end of the last round.
Nothing warms up a crisp July evening in Gauteng like some excitement!
Film and television actress and influencer, Angelique, climbed into the ring in the red corner as part of her long-term commitment to help mitigate the impact of gender-based violence and raise funds for the Family Protection Association, an NPC dedicated to rescuing men, women, and children from abusive and violent situations. The organisation also raises funds to support victims of abuse with their legal costs in courts.
From the blue corner, rock musician and recent 'The Voice SA' winner, Tasché, fought on behalf of everybody who faces ‘the indignity of intolerance and ignorance’ day after day and raised funds for Yellow for Survivors, an NPC dedicated to providing resources and safe spaces for victims of rape and gender-based abuse. Yellow for Survivors also assists in counselling and self-defence classes for victims of abuse.
An astonishing amount of R250,000 was split and handed over to the two organisations after the fight. Angelique also used this platform to talk about gender-based violence.
A line-up of some of SA’s most-loved performers; Francois van Coke, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Early B, Brendan Peyper, Refentse, Janie Bay, Kurt Darren, Rubber Duc, Synth Peter, Posduif, Jan Bloukaas, and Sunset Sweatshop, rocked SuperSport Park before the fight and deep into the night afterwards.
Jaco Geyer from Blue Banana Events said: “We congratulate Angelique and Tasché on their fearless performances. Their dedication to their respective causes is an inspiration. We also thank everybody in South Africa and the rest of the world who have watched BOXOP 3 via lives stream.”
