Eskom CEO finds "strange device" in car
Updated | By Etienne Bruwer
Eskom has confirmed that its CEO, Andre de Ruyter found a "sophisticated" bug in his car.
Whilst cleaning out his car on Friday last week, Eskom CEO André de Ruyter found that his car had been bugged with a "transceiver" that is "highly efficient in design".
According to Sunday Times, De Ruyter discovered the "strange device" on the floor underneath the driver's seat.

“The device — a motherboard filled with microchips — immediately looked out of place. I assume it was stuck to the bottom of the seat and must have shaken loose,” he told Sunday Times.
Other reports claim that the device is "highly sophisticated". According to preliminary reports, as stated by the Sunday Times, the device is not available for purchase by consumers, and it's “typically used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies”.
These reports also show that the bug "can be used in tracking devices, listening devices, smart RFID [radio-frequency identification] devices, metering applications, keys, IoT [internet of things] devices and telemetry devices, and can send data up to a rate of 1.25MBb/s.”

At this point, it is unclear as to what the device was originally used for, and further analysis is still needed.
"They are still analysing the device to find out more about its capabilities,” De Ruyter said.
The Eskom CEO has felt the heat from all directions as South Africa, for the last three weeks, has been hit by some of the worst load shedding in recent times.

Many are calling for de Ruyter to be axed from the role of Eskom CEO, claiming that his incompetence is to blame for the rolling blackouts.
