Former SA heavyweight boxer shot dead

The 54-year-old man was allegedly shot and killed at a sports bar in the East Rand on Saturday night.

Gauteng police have reportedly opened a case of murder after former heavyweight boxer Mark Strydom was shot and killed on Saturday.

Crime activist Yusuf Abramjee first shared the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Mark 'Striker' Strydom was shot dead last night on the East Rand," Abramjee wrote.

According to online news sources, Strydom was shot outside Grand Slam Diner in Edenvale after he allegedly pulled a firearm on a woman.

Details surrounding the incident are scarce, but Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said one person has since been arrested.

"I can confirm that police in Edenvale are investigating a murder docket after a 54-year-old man was shot and killed at a sports bar yesterday [Saturday]. A suspect has been arrested and will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court tomorrow [Monday]."

Sources who chose to stay anonymous confirmed that the man who was killed was the former South African professional heavyweight boxer.

A 2000 report described Mark Strydom as one of the "one of the most notorious thugs in Johannesburg's southern suburbs".

The report also said that: "He (Strydom) has found God and given up his violent ways - but police and some of his victims aren't convinced."
