Tennis legend Serena Williams has announced that she will be retiring from tennis.
On Tuesday, tennis legend Serena Williams announced that she will be leaving tennis after the US Open, which begins in late August.
“I have never liked the word retirement,” Williams wrote in an article. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.”

In an exclusive Vogue article, Williams said that her family is one of the main reasons why she will be leaving the sport. She also spoke out about the "unique" sacrifices many women must make in their careers.
Williams wrote that she is looking to expand her family and this sparked the "evolution" of her career. The tennis legend did note that her decision to expand her family would not have been a "career-ending move" if she were a man.

“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” she wrote. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”
