OUTA CEO: "Motorists don't need to pay outstanding e-toll bills"

On 12 April, Gauteng road users woke up to the much controversial e-toll regime managed by the South African National Agency Limited (SANRAL) finally being scrapped.  

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga gazetted the withdrawal of e-tolls on Thursday, 28 March 2024, making it possible for the gantries to be switched off for tolling purposes.

This comes after years of the controversial toll system being rejected by motorists who refused to pay and various civil society organisations getting involved.

The biggest question remaining now, however, is: will motorists have to pay outstanding debt from before the regime was scrapped. 

After numerous online reports suggested that Gauteng road users would have to pay outstanding bills, Martin Bester spoke to The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) CEO Wayne Duvenage, to set the record straight.

According to Duvenage, motorists do not have to pay for outstanding e-toll bills.

"If you get a summons for outstanding e-toll bills, you contact OUTA and we'll handle the rest," said the South African businessman and entrepreneur.

Duvenage also celebrated the public for standing their ground against e-tolls, saying: "This is a public victory."
