New Year, New Me: How to set realistic New Year's Resolutions
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The Breakfast with Martin Bester team is getting ready for the new year and this is exactly how they plan on being their best selves in 2023!
The start of a new year is the time when most people set major goals in order to bring positive change to their lives.
Unfortunately, it's not always easy to attain those goals you set out for yourself on December 31st.
The Breakfast with Martin Bester team shared some of their wisdom on how to set realistic resolutions.
1. Be realistic
We always hear this and unfortunately it's true; you can't set huge goals with unrealistic outcomes.
Ensure that the goals you set are attainable. Rather start small and work yourself up to your main goal.
Rather than saying I'm never eating sugar again; a more realistic approach could be to just eat less.
2. Be kind to yourself
Eat that piece of chocolate, sleep in on some days, and watch series the whole day. If you put too much pressure on yourself and beat yourself up you are sure to fail. Always remember to love yourself like you love your closest friends and family.
It's okay to slip up sometimes. Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day and take one day at a time.
3. Plan ahead
Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31st arrives.
4. Reward yourself
Once you make progress in your resolutions or reach small milestones, reward yourself.
This could be buying a new piece of clothing after losing some weight or binge-watching your favourite series after finishing the first part of a project.
5. Get a support system
This one might not always be possible, but it's a good idea to seek out friends, family or community members that share your resolution.
Sharing your New Year’s Resolution with like-minded people could help motivate you and the other parties.
