South Africans might not be allowed to own a gun for self-defence
Think again before applying for a gun licence.
South Africans were up in arms on Monday morning after they found out one is not allowed to own a firearm with the main reason of self-defence.
According to the South African Government News Agency, South Africans will soon comment on the Firearms Amendment Bill of 2021. The Bill proposes "tighter controls and management of firearms as well as the establishment of the National Firearms Register".
Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to Ulrich Roux, attorney at Ulrich Roux & Associates, about the matter.
Roux says: “Our gun laws make provisions for private gun ownership. If it were not for Pieter van der Westhuizen for being in a possession of a firearm, a lot of innocent people could have lost their lives.”

Roux previously joined Breakfast with Martin Bester about the case where van der Westhuizen, a former policeman, drew his own licensed weapon when he saw the assailant’s weapon against the pastor's head.
Roux continues: “What we need to remember, in South Africa we are governed by the constitution. The right to protect oneself and to be protected should trump every amended law.”
