Swipe payments at N4 toll gates to be terminated

Road users are being advised to take note of an important change coming to toll gates on the N4.
2024 is nearing its end, and people across South Africa are getting ready to take to the roads for the December holidays.
For those using the N4 highway this holiday, it is important to take note of a new change coming to the toll gates.

As of December 1, magstripe card payments will start phasing out at toll gates on the road.
The announcement was shared by Trans African Concessions (Trac), which manages the N4 toll route.

Starting 1 December 2024, TRAC N4 toll plazas will no longer accept magstripe (swipe) card payments.
The phasing out of magstripe card payments will be implemented across toll gates from Solomon Mahlangu off-ramp in Tshwane, Gauteng, to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.
According to Trac, toll plazas on the N4 will no longer accept magstripe (swipe) card payments starting next month.

Motorists are advised to make provision for alternative payment methods, which include:
- Contactless-enabled debit/credit cards (EMV) – EMV stands for Europay, Visa, and Mastercard, which are the companies that led the development and adoption of this chip technology. In lay terms, ‘tap and pay’.
- Smart devices (smartphones, smartwatches) that are linked to contactless payment apps (e.g., Apple Pay, Samsung Pay).
- TRAC tags for fast, convenient toll access.
- Cash
