TMPD’s Isaac Mahamba discusses bogus cops on Breakfast with Martin Bester
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Fake policemen have been spotted in the Midstream area.
Tshwane Metro Police Department's Isaac Mahamba joined Breakfast with Martin Bester on Monday morning to discuss what plans they have in place to keep citizens safe.
Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to a mother who survived a hijacking after fake police stopped her on the side of the road. The suspects pushed the mother and son off the road and Gerda pulled off as a 'blue uniform' walked towards the vehicle.
However, Martin Bester realised it happens more often than we think after speaking to people in his community.
Police have urged the public to be aware of bogus ‘cops’ hijacking motorists on the N1 highway between Midrand and Centurion.
The Midrand N1 North and South, and certain offramps, have been identified as hijacking hotspots after several cases were recently reported at the Midrand police station.

Lyttleton police spokesperson, Captain Dave Miller, confirmed there has been an increase in hijacking cases in Centurion over the past month.
Superintendent Brian Mokgwatjane from Tshwane Metro internal investigations met with several Community Security bodies to discuss how to minimise the threat these fake cops pose to the community.
Superintendent Mokgwatjane made the following recommendations:
1. If you are stopped at an awkward place and you feel unsafe, please put on your hazards, slowly driving to a safe place.
2. When you are stopped, please don't open your entire window, rather open to the point where you can communicate with the officer.
3. Please note that it is within your rights to demand that the officer identify themselves by giving you their appointment cards.
4. Please stay calm.
5. Never get out of your vehicle until satisfied that the situation is under control.
6. Take note that the 0.0% on alcohol hasn't been gazetted yet.
