7 new Covid-19 deaths in SA

Covid-19 has claimed 7 more lives in South Africa, bringing the death toll up to 65.
Five of the latest fatalities are from the Western Cape and two in KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, the number of new infections has risen sharply by 170.
The number of confirmed cases now stands at 3635.
“The total number of tests conducted to date is 133 774, of which 6 868 were done in the last 24 hours,” the Health Department said in a statement on Wednesday.
Gauteng remains the epicentre of the outbreak with 1224 cases confirmed, followed by the Western Cape with 1079.

This comes just as government ramps up its efforts to fight the virus.
On Tuesday President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a R500 billion relief package as part of the government’s response to the Covid-19 crisis.
Ramaphosa said healthcare facilities, the poor and most vulnerable will be at the centre of the aid, which includes an increase in social grants and billions of rands in subsidies for business and lost wages.
Raamphosa is expected to brief the nation again on Thursday, one week before the national lockdown is set to end.
