Covid-19 infections in South Africa surpass 200 000

The total number of Covid-19 infections has surpassed the 200 000 mark, almost four months after South Africans were first alerted about a coronavirus.

The total number of positive cases now stands at 205 721.
The latest figures also show that Gauteng province is less than 5 000 cases behind the Western Cape, with fears mounting that the country’s economic heartland may become the epi-centre in the coming days.
The Western Cape stands at 70938 total infections while Gauteng is at 66891.

A further 111 deaths have been reported - with Gauteng recording 50 deaths, the Western Cape 35, in Limpopo there have been 17 deaths and 9 from the Eastern Cape.
The country’s recovery rate has not changed and remains below 50%.
