Jhb cautions against park visits during level 3
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has cautioned residents against visiting the city’s parks during level 3 of the lockdown.
The JCPZ says it has noted an increase in the use of parks throughout the day, especially for exercise.
Spokesperson Jenny Moodley says she’s concerned about the increase in visitors at public parks.
“We have got parks that are unfenced and these facilities we are finding that there are pockets of non-compliance.
“At this stage we are urging residents to avoid using parks.”
Moodley adds: “We are aware that cabin fever is an issue, but this is all aimed at ensuring that there is no resurgence or new way of spreading Covid-19.”

The excursions will only be permitted in parks that cater for self-drives. This means Namaqua National Park, Boulders and Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park will remain closed. SANParks CEO Fundisile Mketeni says the opening of the parks will be done under the strictest health protocols.
She says the playgrounds and ablution facilities at parks pose a major health risk.
“There are a lot of little children, we know that the spread happens on hard surfaces when it comes to playgrounds, we know that some of our users are illegally using the ablution facilities which should remain closed.
“There is that protentional of spreading Covid-19.”
Law enforcement agencies regularly patrol public spaces, including parks, to ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations but Moodley also urges residents to play their part.
“We are hoping that self-regulation will take place.”
