Mkhize welcomes 'breakthrough' Covid-19 drug
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, says his department is excited about the breakthrough of a new drug that is been tested for managing the spread of Covid-19.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Mkhize says the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy) trial has published promising results.
"The trial has published results on the therapeutic merits of low dose dexamethasone which are extremely promising and are easily implementable in our country.
"Dexamethasone is a well known and widely used steroid which has potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in allergic reactions, asthma and other conditions where the inflammatory component of the disease needs to be controlled for better outcomes," says the minister.
Mkhize says he is pleased that the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19 has issued an advisory for clinical applications of these break through study results.
The minister has also revealed that South Africa's coronavirus total stands at 76 334 cases, 2801 which are new cases.
The death toll has risen to 1625 after 57 people lost their lives in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday.
