‘Not out of the woods yet’ – Mkhize hopeful as SA reaches Covid-19 peak
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize has cautioned that South Africa is not out of the woods yet when it comes to new Covid-19 infections.
The warning comes in spite of indications that the country’s hardest-hit provinces may have reached their infection peak.
Gauteng, as well as the Western and the Eastern Cape, have all shown a decline in new Covid-19 infections.

“It looks to us that the three may have got the surges in the three provinces already and may have been picking up a slight decline,” Mkhize said during a Covid-19 update on Tuesday.
“There were reports that the hospitals were full and we went around and confirmed that it is the admission areas that were filling up.
“The field hospital beds have never been full and even today we have not filled Nasrec (field hospital). However, the trends are now decreasing (but) we are not yet out of the woods.”
To date the cumulative number of Covid-19 infections stand at 521 318 with 363 781 recoveries.
The 24 hours leading up to Tuesday evening saw 345 new deaths to take the total number of fatalities to 8 884.
