President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Thursday on the government’s plans to ease regulations put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

During the address he announced that South Africans can expect for lockdown regulations to be eased from next month – with SA moving from the current stage 5 phase to level 4.

Ramaphosa said as certain industries resume trade, certain goods would also be open for sale.

This includes the much-debated sale of cigarettes.

“The sale of cigarettes will be permitted,” said Ramaphosa.

“The range of goods that may be sold will be extended to incorporate certain additional categories. These will be detailed by the relevant ministers.”

Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Thursday evening on the government's plans to ease regulations that have been put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19. Following extensive deliberation with the national command council, Ramaphosa said the country could not afford an abrupt end to the national lockdown.

But the liquor industry would continue to bear the brunt of the lockdown measure, with the sale of alcohol still not permitted.

“Bars and shebeens will remain closed,” said Ramaphosa.

“Conference and convention centres, entertainment venues, cinemas, theatres, and concerts will remain closed.”

He added: “Concerts, sporting events, and religious, cultural and social gatherings will not be allowed until it is deemed safe for them to continue.”
