Some 135 health workers infected with Covid-19, says Mkhize

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize estimates that 135 health workers have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the outbreak in March.
In the latest update on the rate of infection in the country on Tuesday, Mkhize said the country had 4996 confirmed cases.
The number of fatalities have risen to 93.
Mkhize said it’s concerning that health workers in both public and private hospitals are being infected.
“In the private sector there have been a large number of health workers who have been infected.
“The number of health workers who have been infected is probably close to 135. This covers public and private sector.”
He added: “Among these there have been some doctors, nurses, technicians and some other members of staff.”

Statistics released by the Department of Health on Tuesday night show that three more people have succumbed to the virus. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize hosted a technical briefing on the latest Covid-19 developments in the country. Mkhize said all 3 the latest fatalities were from the Western Cape.
Mkhize admitted that it has become more difficult to trace the source of transmission.
“We have gone in to check the basis of infection. It was easier in the early days when it was people with history of travel.
“But now of late we are now dealing with internal transmission. That makes it difficult to work out where the source of infection is.”
A retired Eastern Cape doctor is among those who have lost their lives while battling against the outbreak.
