South Africa may buck coronavirus trends: Mkhize
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize believes it is possible that
South Africa won’t follow the same COVID-19 infection and death trends
experienced in other countries.
Mkhize addressed the media on Friday and said this was due to the decision taken by government to act immediately and stop cases from other parts of the world, entering the country.
“Now anyone who would have doubted that there’s is lot sense in this decision should have at least now been convinced. That was going to be the first and temporary problem because as soon as we can stop those imported cases, we were going to get on to a phase where we have our own internal transmission.
“Now in this case, we have actually started disrupting the internal transmission because in the absence of those who came from the outside, we have enough conditions to spread the virus rapidly among our own,” said Mkhize.
He added the fact that the country is seeing a reduction from 40% to 4% increase, means South Africa is now seeing a slightly different trend.
“You will see now that it is possible to buck the trend that the other countries are taking. This is too early, these are just indications,” added the minister.
The minister also revealed that the number of people who
tested positive has increased to 2003, while 73 028 tests have been
conducted.
