The university's Martin Ramotshela says the professor, who had been on sick leave since March 18, is uncertain when or where he was infected. "This was confirmed by his doctor soon after he received the results of the test. He reported the matter to his line manager and informed colleagues with whom he had had contact after his return.
The university is among the first university’s to have closed its doors after a member of staff tested positive for Covid-19.
Conferences and events were cancelled and students given 72 hours to vacate the premises.
“The university continues to wish all the affected staff members and students well and a speedy return to good health,” Moholola adds.
Overall, the country has recorded 1380 cases of coronavirus since the first infection in March.
