Why a Japanese zoo's hyena's wouldn't breed
Updated | By
When a Japanese zoo attemped to breed a pair of spotted hyenas, they discovered the failure to breed wasn't due to any genetic imbalances, or altitude issues... It was because both the hyenas were male! The Maruyama zoo claims to have spent years trying to get the pair to breed, only to discover they were of the same gender. According to expert opinion, the sex of hyenas can be a task to pinpoint because females can grow "psuedo-penises," clitorises that are nearly the same size as a male's penis.
