Kayla, 15, receives support for life-saving transplant
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The Angels came together to assist 15-year-old Kayla Storm and her family with the funds needed to cover her medical needs and enable her to get a bone marrow transplant that will save her life.
Kayla Storm, 15, is an academic achiever, a great 400m, 800m, and hurdles athlete, and she loves arts and crafts. She has an eight-year-old brother, Kayden, and parents, Eugene and Catherine, who work full-time.
In September this year, this happy family’s life took an unexpected turn: Kayla was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukaemia. Since then, Kayla has been in and out of hospital for tests and treatments.
She's received the news that she will have to get a bone marrow transplant to enable full recovery.

Her school community has been very supportive, assisting with fundraising and helping where and how they can.

The family has a hospital plan, but as we know, so much is not covered, and the bills are piling up.
Kayla is currently at home while her brother goes to school, and her parents have to keep working to cover as much as they can.
Several members of the community have reached out to Good Morning Angels to help this family and beautiful young girl, to beat the disease and blossom to her full potential.

REQUEST FOR: 15-year-old Kayla Storm and her parents, Eugene and Catherine
REQUEST FROM: Several listeners like Lenie Nepgen
ANGEL 1: Gerhard van der Westhuizen and Rayno Strauss from 'The Survivors' Golf Day
SPONSORING: Gerhard and Rayno started their annual golf day some seven years ago after they both survived cancer and realised how many families did not have the medical cover and means to beat the disease. This year's golf day takes place on Friday, 29 November - and they already have some funds available to assist Kayla and her family.
The Survivors Golf Day and all their supporters will upgrade Kayla and her entire family’s medical aid and pay that for them for a year. They will also donate a further R85,000 which will help to cover more of the costs that the family are raising funds for. That's a total sponsorship of R185,000.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Dear Good Morning Angels,
I would like to bring this child’s journey to you:
Kayla Storm, the 15-year daughter of Eugene Brits & Catherine Storm, was diagnosed on 17 September 2024 with Mixed Phenotype Leukaemia – acute AML & ALL. A bone marrow transplant is inevitable.
She is currently being treated with chemo treatment in Pretoria East Hospital Oncology Unit. Kayla will be receiving chemo treatment, clinical psychology treatment and others, until a bone marrow donor can be found for a bone marrow transplant. Her second chemo treatment has just been given and her cell count is currently on zero. Prone to infection and fever she is being monitored closely.
She will be going home once her cell count can reach 3 and be at a home environment for 7 to 10 days to give the cells chance to spike. Then she will be admitted again, tested and continue on an ongoing basis until she can reach a remission status.
Father, Eugene Brits works 12 hour shifts each day at a security company and Mother Catherine is an admin assistant at an NGO (working from 8 to 4) and has 8-year boy Kayden in Primary School.
As we know the cost of living yet alone the cost of medical care and cancer treatment. This family really needs a miracle to make Kayla’s faithful journey through Grace and Hope to a cancer free life. The family needs help and all of what they can get. Physical, mentally, emotionally and financially.
Kayla is currently on a Hospital plan. The family don't have the means to upgrade the medical aid to a higher plan or to pay for any additional medical costs.

We know that a bone marrow transplant can be costly and that it will be a challenge to obtain the amounts out of ordinary salaries to pay for. That is why we ask and pray for any angel to bless them. Financially for medical costs that will come their way, but also to help Kayla on her journey as well as the family to encourage them and stand by them through this journey. We were not put on this earth to walk alone or to fight battles alone. We have been put here to help where we can. And if it is for me to reach out and ask for any help, then that is my purpose other than to give love and close support to the family.
I don’t know how you would be able to get involved but I know that Kayla is destined to touch hearts and to be a warrior and beat leukaemia. Our faith is in God to heal her so she can be a warrior and write the best story in her book of life. Her parents and family loves her dearly and cannot walk this journey alone.
Kayla is a young and bright learner at Hoërskool Oos-Moot High and the headmaster has said that her grades are so good that she passed this year. She will not be able to attend school next year but we hope and pray that she will be given the opportunity to do online school for 2025 and still be able to finish with her friends. She misses her friends and family, and athletics as she was great in 400m, 800m and hurdles. She loves arts & crafts and schoolwork.
I know this family has a lot of challenges at the moment and their future is facing even more challenges. But I also believe that by giving support and love they will see the end of this journey as a miracle. And that is my prayer: That they receive a miracle. I also think that God chose Kayla to fight this battle to bring hope to so many others following her and even to us walking this journey with her. Through God's Grace and Faith we are hopeful.
This is her prayer. To be healed and to finish school.
Baie liefde Groete
