Assisting children with burn scars after suffering scolding burns
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Good Morning Angels assisted the Avela Foundation to help children with laser treatment for their burn scars and support for their families with a donation of R105,000 - to cover their costs for three months.
Tebogo Buchanan is a formidable mom and community builder. Her passion lies with a very special community she became part of through a devastating, life-changing event a decade ago.
A house fire claimed the life of her two-year-old son and caused her four-year-old son to sustain burn wounds over 50% of his body.
This tragic event was followed by months in and out of hospital for her son and several trips to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town for skin laser treatments.

She realised that healing of the skin did not mean healing for the burn survivor or their families.
Not many people understood the challenges she and her family faced, but she found the support she needed with the Avela Foundation.
Tebogo has been working with the Avela Foundation since 2017, to assist children and their families affected by burn wounds - not just with the healing of their wounds, but also their hearts.
Tebogo holds a weekly support group at Baragwanath Hospital’s Children’s Burns unit.
She helped Avela fundraise to buy another laser machine, which is now used at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.
They would like to help as many children to get laser treatment for their scars as possible.

At the moment, they can assist four children a week, but with some help, they hope to increase this to 200.
This will cost R35,000 per month to cover costs associated with this treatment.
That's why the Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club nominated Tebogo and the Avela Foundation for assistance from Good Morning Angels.
