Bobby and Karlien van Jaarsveld are the stars of their own reality television show called 'In Jou Skoene'. The show sees them stepping into the shoes of different professions and experience a day in the life of a number of organisations. BACKGROUND: El-Shammah Home For Abandoned Babies has been a place of safety for abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected babies since 2009. They have the capacity to look after 18 babies at a time. These babies are unwanted, but at El-Shammah find love, care, food, shelter and provide warmth. Alistair and Merencia Scholtz have dedicated their lives to the vulnerable, having attempted adopting a baby themselves. They have a 'basket' with a bell at the front gate, where babies can be placed, rather than be abandoned. Currently they are renting a house in Primrose, but due to circumstances the owner needs to sell the property. The selling price for the house is R850 000.
Bobby and Karlien van Jaarsveld asked us to be angels and help this home. Being parents, we knew that this cause would be close to their hearts. We tasked them with the challenge to help save El-Shammah Home, who save the lives of little babies every day.
ORIGINAL REQUEST:
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you because I need the help of all who live in South Africa to save lives. I am not familiar with the stats but what is common knowledge is that new born babies die everyday for various reasons some which we can’t control and others which we can.
El-Shammah Home For Abandoned Babies is a place of safety for abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected babies. The home was set up in 2009 and is currently run by Allistair and Merencia Scholtz, the home accommodates up to 18 babies at a time ranging form from 0 to 18months, El-Shammah main focus is to nurture abandoned babies who have been let go by their parents for many different reasons and help them get adopted so that they may have a better life.
El-Shammah has overcome many battles however it is now going through one of the most testing and challenging time off all. This beacon of hope is due to move at the end of January due to lack of a funds to buy the premises, which we have been renting since its inception in 2009. The property, where the organisation is renting is up for sale and an amount of R850 000 is needed to purchase the property and secure its existence.
It’s imperative to keep the house as it’s known to social workers, police and the community who bring babies in crisis situations there for care and a safe haven. Imagine what it must take to do this kind of work emotionally and then have to worry about keeping the house that is home to all these abused and abandoned kids.
In addition, Allistair and Merencia would like to also expand their facilities to take care of more babies and for longer periods of time however that battle we will fight later, the battle now is to secure the premises.
This is a call to all who live and work in South Africa, to save the home of these young souls who have done nothing wrong in their lives and are so small that they can’t control their circumstances. The goal is to have 8499 people donate R100 towards this worthy cause.
