Creating Safe Spaces for young people through 'Fight for Insight'

In the inner city of Johannesburg, Fight with Insight is a Safe Space for young people to grow and learn through exercise.
READ: Bringing festive joy to children in need
It is a thriving community project, built around an open-access gym in Braamfontein, aimed at bringing joy, support, and knowledge amid the hardship and shortcomings of daily Joburg life. Through the gym, children are connected to an integrated child development programme with a fun focus on: fitness, food, functional feelings, the future, and family.
The fitness aspect comes in the form of weight training, running, boxing - for boys and girls, soccer and netball. Meals are prepared in a training kitchen for around 50 children per day and between 200 and 500 on a Saturday. The programme includes psycho-social and educational support. Fight with Insight also supports children with education, school fees, and skills needed for adult life.
This coming Saturday, Fight with Insight will be hosting a Youth Conference, where boys and girls are encouraged to think, learn, and talk together about Gender-Based Violence and Femicide and come up with ways to #EndGBVF together.

FWI Youth Conference 2023
Focus: Gender-based Violence & Femicide
Theme: Unite: Youth Activism to end GBVF!
Background: The underlying message permeating discourse around GBVF is one of diametrically opposed ‘othering’, which is evident in movements like #MeToo and #MenAreTrash, where accepting that women are victims of GBVF, means rejecting that men can be good. In a way, GBVF interventions focusing on specific groups (girls, LGBTQI+ etc.) support ‘othering’ and negate fluidity in how we think about our identities (sexual, relational, professional). There are no spaces where different people can come together to discuss gender and violence in all its forms, promoting healthy identity development, empathy and social cohesion, which is a source of protection against GBVF. In the inner city of Johannesburg, young people grow up in a concentrated microcosm of these socio-cultural narratives of othering that have disrupted social cohesion and sustained endemic proportions of GBVF.
Aim: Our aim is to create an environment that young people want to be a part of, and can be present in to think together. For the 2023 Youth Conference, Fight with Insight is calling on young people to unite to #EndGBVF through learning and activism.
Conference Objectives:
- To create a space where young people from different backgrounds can come together
- To share their thoughts and experiences of what contributes to GBVF in their communities,
- To gain perspective on the relevance of GBVF to young people through story-telling and
- To contribute to conversations about what young people can do to #EndGBVF.
Outcome: We plan to not only create an environment that serves as a sustainable model for social cohesion, but one that attracts a critical mass large enough for this model to be successfully transferred into the broader community we work in, making the inner city a safer place, free from GBVF, for children and young people living there. The outcomes of the conference are buffered by the locality of Fight with Insight, and our long-term presence within the community.
