BACKGROUND: Instances of violence against children in South Africa are of the highest in the world - a shocking reality. The official figures are staggering: more than 24,000 sexual offences were committed against children and almost 1,000 deaths between April 2019 and March 2020 - before the COVID-19 lockdown. It is also well-known that offences committed against children are grossly under-reported - which means that the reality is far worse. Children who are removed from these circumstances are often separated from their siblings and often have to return to where they came from - that’s why Yenzani opened its doors in 2003.
The founder of Yenzani, Sanne Mirk, was a volunteer at a children’s home and wanted to contribute to providing a real home for vulnerable children, where they could flourish as part of a family. Over the years, many children have found a loving, nurturing family at Yenzani, which is currently home to seven boys and seven girls between the ages of 4 and 17. Through hard work and dedication to the children, the home has been able to fulfil the needs of its special residents, but as a self-funded NGO, the need is always greater than the means. As part of his 50th birthday gift last week from Jacaranda FM, Nick was given the opportunity to be the first Angel to a person or organisation in need, by nominating a cause close to his heart for assistance. Nick nominated Yenzani Children’s Home in Midrand, which is situated in the Jacaranda FM Broadcast HQ neighborhood

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
In 2002, Sanne Mirk formed Yenzani Children’s Home after her volunteering experience challenged her to confront her concern for children ‘returning’ to the home of their perpetrators. Sanne secured a “home” rent-free, she met with the Child Protection Unit of the South Africa (SA) Police Services (SAPS) and the Department of Social Development (DSD) to establish and address the critical need for child protection in the Midrand area of South Africa.
"Making it Happen Children’s Project” t/a “Yenzani Children’s Home” - a Non-Profit Company, Non-profit Organisation, and Public Benefit Organisation - was born. On 4 November 2004, Amos Masondo (Mayor of Johannesburg) presented Yenzani with a Certificate of Recognition for services rendered to the Citizens of Johannesburg Regions 1 and 2.
By early 2010, the organisation purchased a permanent ‘home’ thanks to the National Lotteries Commission and hopes to open a second home in the future.
