Good Morning Angels: The Rustenburg community come together to help their own
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
On Wednesday's Good Morning Angels the Rustenburg community came together to assist an Angel in their own community.
Morné and Mariëtte Coetzer are well known and loved members of the Rustenburg community. They are known for helping where they can.
They have two sons, but as a family, they are 11 people including both their mothers, Morne's aunt, their godchild and Morne's sister-in-law and her twins.
They lost Morné’s brother due to a heart attack in November 2021. They run a restaurant called Hunter's Pub and Grill, but both have day-jobs too.
Good Morning Angels: Three little lives to be saved with life-changing heart procedures
After Covid, Morné lost over half of his day-job income, while they still paid their staff at the pub.
Morné started developing sores on his legs in August 2021 and by the end of last year these got so bad that he ended up in hospital. It turned out to be a flesh eating bacteria that resulted in both Morné’s legs being amputated at the knees.
Morné now needs assistance to do the basics and his matriculant son is doing his last year of school online, in order for his mom to keep working, while he helps his dad at home.
Morné needs prosthetic limbs and rehab but they also have a huge hospital debt to pay off.
Good Morning Angels: A young man gets to finish his final year of studies
A good Samaritan has offered to make the legs for a vastly reduced price of R60 000 for the pair - but even this is a financial bridge too far.
A group of artists, who have been supported by Morné and his pub before, are now organising a fundraiser for their friend, to help him in his hour of need.
They also reached out to Good Morning Angels on Morné and his family’s behalf.

Aan Wie dit mag aangaan.
My naam is Pierre de beer.
Ek het ń goeie vriend...Sy naam is Morne Coetzer.
My hart is so stukkend vandag want my vriend het albei sy bene onlangs moes amputeer agv ń vleisvretende bakteriee wat sy liggaam aangeval het.
Groete,
Pierre de Beer
Cindy's letter:
Good Afternoon Jacaranda
I know you’re inundated with requests, but please read Mariette’s email below…………….
This family have taken in many people to care for, they never turn their backs on anybody in need. They’ve helped our community in massive proportions and I’d be so appreciative if the Angels could help them now.
Morné and his family are struggling to find the means to live normal lives (groceries, diesel to get to school and back, etc). We are currently arranging a fund raiser for Morne & his family - ALL the funds we raise that day will go to this family. Mariette is now the breadwinner for 11 people. It breaks my heart to see what they are going through.
Regards,
Cindy
Mariette’s letter:
Good day
Just a little something to give you a bit of background on Morné and our family;
There are 11 people in our household.
Morné, me, our two sons, my mother and my mother in law, Morne's aunt, our godchild and then (Morne's brother that passed away in November 2021) wife and twins. We will never show anyone away that has nowhere to go.
From August 2021 he started getting sores that made ulcers on both his lower legs. That was because of poor blood flow because he is a broker. He sits alot infront of the computer working and did not get very much exercise.
He did have treatment from wound care sisters but as we all know medical expenses are very high and could not continue with it for too long.
Due to covid we had to terminate our medical aid to cover other costs and especially pay our workers their monthly salaries at Hunters Pub and Grill.
We only started our hospital plan in October 2021 and they refused to pay for Morne's treatment. Furthermore the company Morne is working for cut his salary by about 60% and things became very tough at work and home.
We nursed him at home and so it became better with time.
But the last few months of 2022 he was in alot of pain. On 10 December 2022 we took him to hospital where he was admitted to the Medi Care clinic in Rustenburg.
The day after he was admitted his specialist Dr Vally took him to teater to clean the wounds and he informed us that Morne has a flesh eating bacteria. On Monday 12 December Dr Vally advised that there are 2 options, either to fight and try to save his legs or amputade. We took the option to try and save it.
So on Wednesday 14 December he took him to teater again but he informed us afterwards that the bacteria has spread too far and he does not have a choice but to amputate both his legs through the knees.
The amputations were done on Thursday 15 December.
Morne is going to need prosthetic legs and after care. But our hospital plan does not cover any of the outside hospital costs nor rehab.
Our son, who is in Matric this year, is going to do his last year online because he needs to help dad at home for I'm working and we can't afford to leave my job.
Thank you
Mariette Coetzer
