Good Morning Angels: Single mother is battling skin cancer and retrenchment

Shoneez Allow from Eldorado Park has never had an easy life. She had to leave school after Grade 10 to care for her mother who had a stroke.

BACKGROUND: She never completed matric. As a mother herself, she has always taken care of her own six children on her own. During lockdown, Shoneez was diagnosed with a type of skin cancer, but returned to work in July - only to be retrenched. With her small severance package, Shoneez paid a few months’ rent and kept her family afloat. She has two children still in school, as well as a four-year-old at home, and she is very worried that they will lose the roof over their heads (they’ve moved over 20 times in four years). Her father and sister, Nafisa, assists where they can with food, but they too have limited resources. In desperation about her sister’s situation, Nafisa wrote to Good Morning Angels asking for assistance for Shoneez and her children.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Good Day Angels.

My name is Nafisa and I’m writing on behalf of my eldest sister, Shoneez.

I love my sister so much and she is so sweet and humble and loving and to see her go through this hell that she is going, breaks my heart.

She had to leave school when she was in grade 10 to take care of my mother. My mother had a stroke and could not talk, walk or do anything. She could not complete her matric.

She is a single mother with 6 children. She lives in a rental house and works for a company where her salary is less than R 5000.00, she worked in Midrand and had to travel from Eldorado Park to Midrand every day.

She recently found out that she has a type of skin cancer. The hospital advised that they cannot operate now to perform further testing due to Covid 19 and she has not been able to work during the lockdown period and only returned to work approximately 2 weeks now, after having to get letters from the doctor stating that she is fit to work.

Today I am in tears as she was called in by her HR who advised her that they are going to retrench her. She will be finishing off at the end of July.

She is the sole provider in her home and pays rent of R 3000.00, she has had to move over 20 times in the last 4 years as she is not able to pay rent (rent just keeps going up every year), transport, see to her children at schools' needs and groceries on the salary that she gets. Her youngest children are in grade 11, grade 8 and 4-years old.

She has 3 children who is finished with school but are not able to get work due to the current economic state and has been trying for the past 3 years.

She does not receive any financial assistance from any of the children’s fathers.

My father and myself have been helping her where we can with a few grocery items but it has not been enough.  There are days when she and her children sleep hungry. She is not able to buy the necessities in order to live such as groceries, toiletries, clothes for the kids.

I can no longer sit here and keep these tears in, I cannot see my sister and her children go through what they are going through.

I plead and beg with my life if you can please assist. Any generous offer will be accepted, whether it be some relief on her having to pay rent, groceries, a new job anything I beg of you. Please help from a sister with a bleeding heart.
