Helping a family after losing a mom and son in a car crash
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Power Build donated R100,000 to Jurie van Aswegen and his daughter after his wife and son tragically died in a car accident.

Late afternoon on Monday, March 10, the Van Aswegen family was on their way home after the children’s school activities. Eight-year-old Karlu and 10-year-old Junique attend Laerskool Stephanus Roos in Sinoville, Pretoria.
Their mother, Karin, worked as an activities coach in pre-primary schools, while their father, Jurie, is a self-employed electrician.
They were travelling on the Moloto Road to their smallholding in De Wagendrift, about 40km north of Pretoria.

A car in the oncoming lane lost control and crashed head-on into the Van Aswegen family's vehicle. Little Karlu died on impact, and their mother, Karin, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday evening.

Jurie is currently in Mamelodi Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery on his arm on Tuesday (yesterday).
Junique is in Steve Biko Academic Hospital, receiving treatment for multiple injuries.
She has been under sedation for most of the time and does not yet know that her mother and brother have passed away.

Jurie's brother-in-law, Herman Holtzhausen, says they hope to help Jurie find a place to rent closer to the school and family, as they do not have transport and he won't be able to work for some time.
This is why Herman reached out to Good Morning Angels – to help Jurie get back on his feet after this tragic loss, so he can continue caring for Junique, who still faces a long recovery ahead.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Dear Mr. Martin Bester and the Good Morning Angels Team,
I trust this letter finds you well. I am writing to you with a heavy heart to seek your assistance for the Van Aswegen family, who have recently endured an unimaginable tragedy.
On Monday, 10 March, the family was involved in a catastrophic accident on the Moloto Road while on their way home. This heartbreaking incident resulted in the loss of Jurie’s eight-year-old son, Karlu, who died on impact, and his wife, Karin (44), who tragically passed away on Tuesday night.
Jurie and his ten-year-old daughter, Junique, are the only survivors and are still in hospital. Jurie is in Mamelodi Regional Hospital, while Junique is in Steve Biko Academic Hospital. This devastating event has plunged the family into profound grief and financial distress.

Jurie has not only suffered the irreplaceable loss of his loved ones but has also been struggling since they lost their business. The family has lost everything and has been facing severe financial hardship. Karin worked at Monkeynastix, and Jurie took on odd jobs wherever he could find work.
The accident has left him without a vehicle, further exacerbating the challenges he will face once discharged from the hospital. Currently, they live in De Wagendrift (Leeukloofvallei), while Junique attends Laerskool Stephanus Roos. The emotional and financial burdens of this tragedy are overwhelming, and Jurie is in dire need of support to rebuild his life.
I am reaching out to you because Jacaranda FM has consistently been a beacon of hope and support for those in need. Your kindness and generosity have positively impacted many lives, and I am confident that with your assistance, Jurie can find some measure of solace and stability during this difficult time.
Any form of support – whether financial contributions, donations, or assistance with transportation arrangements – would be greatly appreciated and would significantly help Jurie as he navigates this painful journey.
Thank you for considering this heartfelt request. Your compassion and willingness to help can provide much-needed relief to a family in distress. I look forward to your positive response and am deeply grateful for any assistance you can offer.
Sincerely,
Herman Holtzhausen (Brother-in-law)
