New Hope School in Pretoria has been bringing hope and education to children with special educational needs for almost 50 years. The school has 435 learners, from pre-school to Grade 12.

Children are referred to the school by the Department of Education. They cater for children with physical challenges like severe epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and impaired movement, as well as learning challenges like autistic spectrum disorder and severe intellectual challenges.

The school offers three Curricular Streams to give each learner the opportunity to develop according to their ability, including mainstream CAPS, Vocational Training, and Basic Life Skills.

The school is very proud of their 100% matriculation record for the past seven years, but it is what happens after school for many of their learners that they are trying to address now with a new Skills Development Centre.

The centre is a self-funded project that will afford learners the after-school training and stimulation that is currently not available to them. The aim is to up-skill school leavers to earn an income and make a living as adults, creating avenues for a sustainable career and income, rather than remaining dependant on others.

Since we last spoke to Karen Meyer, head of the special needs department at the school, their building project has reached roof height.

The building project is managed pro-bono by Agora SA. They say they still need windows and R800,000 for labour to use all the material that has been donated.
