Spreading warmth and hope to animals in need

Good Morning Angels donated more than R100,000 to four different animal sanctuaries to assist those who work tirelessly to help our animals in need.

"What once was a sanctuary is now a scene of devastation." This is how Lexi Lines described the scene after she returned to her farm from hospital. The farm houses the Paws and Purrs Animal Rescue in Hekpoort near Magaliesburg.

The people who were left in charge of the rescue animals had disappeared without a word, leaving the kennels and gates open.

Two of their 17 rescue dogs, as well as their pet pig, Waddles, were killed.

Lexi is devastated at the loss and mistreatment of the animals they themselves saved from harm for a better life.

Several people sent requests to Good Morning Angels for assistance to help them in their hour of need.

Stephan Hendriks from No More Tears Animal Rescue in Randfontein

BACKGROUND: No More Tears Animal Rescue has been assisting animals and pet owners in the Randfontein area since 2021, after its founder, Stephan Hendriks, started rescuing animals in 2017. The community they serve is struggling financially. Stephan says most of their fundraising efforts are to look after strays and also to help residents look after their pets. They assist with veterinary visits, sterilisation, and also pet education and look after around 30 animals a month. "We focus on giving strays and abandoned animals – the forgotten souls on the streets – a second chance. We provide them with medical care, rebuild their trust, and find them loving forever homes. Every animal receives vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and sterilisation," says Stephan.

Just last weekend, Stephan assisted the owner of a cat that got stuck high in a tree. Five-year old Smokey could not get down, despite several attempts. He was in the tree without food or water for five days, when Stephan arranged for a tree feller to climb up some 25 meters to bring Smokey to safety.

He did not hesitate to pay the R1,700 bill to save Smokey; that's just the kind of thing that Stephan and No More Tears do.

Smokey was treated by a vet and is safely back home.

FORA - Friends of Rescued Animals in Tarlton on the West Rand

BACKGROUND: Last month, FORA was hit by a senseless tragedy. 14 of their dogs were poisoned during the night in their kennels. FORA personnel and their security company checked on the kennels a few times, because the animals were restless - but nothing was found until the morning.

12 of the dogs were dead, and two more were rushed to the vet.

They could find no motive for this senseless act; no fences were cut, and there was no sign of other criminality.

Besides the trauma and worry about security, this cost to them to burn all the blankets, vet bills, and cremation was substantial.

They now want to install security cameras and extra fencing, to keep their animals safe.

SPONSORING: The Good Morning Angels Fund assisted FORA with R30,000 to help with the additional costs of security, to keep their animals safe.
