Losing weight is not easy.

A 2023 report by Wits University states that half of all South Africans are overweight or obese.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes being overweight or obese as a weight that is higher than what is considered healthy for a given height. Obesity is also defined by excess body fat (adipose tissue) that may impair health.

Over the years, several celebrities have shared their secrets to their weight loss.

Earlier this year, Kelly Clarkson opened up to People about how she lost 60lbs (about 20kg) in a few months.

Clarkson attributed her weight loss to a healthy lifestyle.

“I eat a healthy mix,” she told People

“I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple (of) years I didn’t. And 90% of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!

“But I still splurge. The other night I had a frozen yogurt with my daughter, and it was magical."

Unathi Nkayi

Media personality Unathi Nkayi has lost a whopping 30kg since she began her weight loss journey a decade ago.

In January 2022, she took to Instagram to encourage those who are feeling overweight to exercise.

"A year ago I was NOT happy with my body coz of lockdown," she wrote on Instagram.

"My daughter thought she was getting a younger sibling (which she still wants now) and would tell everyone how excited she was at the prospect. I had regressed with my body goals," she added.

"On NYE 2020 I went for a sunset run ALONE at the stairs and promised myself to make sure that I would feel VERY different this time round Dec 2021. Which I did because I kept my promise to myself. Good luck with your goals. You’re WORTH it beloved. I look at these pics to remind me of why I started. 2012 vs 2022."

Earlier in 2021, she said it takes hard work to maintain a healthy weight.

"I have had to work for it. Every day I have had to choose my dreams and that comes with work. Wanting to be happy has meant I have had to wake up and WORK on my happiness," she wrote on Instagram in 2021

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey lost a lot of weight recently.

In March, she opened up about using medication to help her shed the kilos.

“I come to this conversation in the hope that we can start releasing the stigma and the shame and the judgement to stop shaming other people for being overweight, or how they choose to lose or not lose weight, and more importantly to stop shaming ourselves," The Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“When I tell you how many times I have blamed myself, because you think ‘I’m smart enough to figure this out’, and then to hear all along it’s you fighting your brain. This is what I got for the first time after I took the medication - all these years I thought all of the people who never had to diet were just using their willpower and they were for some reason stronger than me. And now I realise y’all weren’t even thinking about the food.

“It’s not that you had the willpower you weren’t thinking about, you weren’t obsessing about it. That is the big thing I learned."
