Why do some women remain in an abusive relationship for years?
It's often not easy to make a distinction between what is an unhealthy or unsatisfying relationship, and what is an abusive relationship. This is according to expert psychologist Sue Hickey - who's also co-author of “When Loving Him Hurts”.
"I sometimes have situations where women come to me and they say, 'I'm in an abusive relationship'. In actual fact when you discuss the relationship, it's not abusive. It's unsatisfying," says Hickey.
"So we have to be very careful as to what 'abusive' actually means. Because we don't want to discredit the idea of being in an abusive relationship by calling everything that is unhappy 'abusive'. Not every unhappy relationship can be called abusive," she tells 'DrD' Dorianne Weil in the latest Thrive with 'DrD' podcast episode.
