Early signs of pancreatic cancer

This World Pancreatic Cancer Day, here are signs you need to look out for.

World Pancreatic Cancer Day is observed annually on 21 November. 

Pancreatic cancer is the 12th most common cancer worldwide, according to the World Cancer Research Fund

The publication also states that pancreatic cancer is the 11th most common cancer in men and in women. 

In South Africa,  in 2020, a total of 1 982 cancer deaths were estimated to be due to pancreatic cancer - 1 006 were males and 976 females. This is according to a 2024 South African Medical Journey report.

The cancer can show various symptoms, however, WebMD states that 'having any or all of these symptoms doesn’t mean that you have pancreatic cancer. But if you have several of these symptoms, it's time to see your doctor. 

  • Fatigue or physical weakness
  • Jaundice and related symptoms
  • Itchy skin.
  • Dark yellow or brown pee.
  • Light-colored poop.
  • Digestive problems
  • Upper belly pain. 
  • Middle back pain. 
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Gas or bloating

Some of the celebrities who have suffered pancreatic cancer include - Alex Trebek, Steve Jobs, and Aretha Franklin. 

To minimize the chances of suffering from cancer, lifestyle changes are required. Doing the following can help minimise the risk of suffering from cancer - quitting smoking, maintaining a moderate body weight, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising regularly and eating healthy.
