Updated | By Poelano Malema
Arrive Alive has shared tips to help you remain safe on the road this Easter 2023.
Easter 2023 has arrived.
Thousands of South Africans will be traveling to be with their loved ones, while others will going on holiday.
However, there are many road accidents that occur during this period.
Last year, a total of 162 people died on our roads. In 2021, 235 lives were lost during the Easter holiday.
Although there has been a 31.5% decline, more can still be done to ensure no lives are lost due to negligence on the road.
Taking precaution starts with properly planning for your trip and ensuring that you are fit to drive and your car is roadworthy.

Arrive Alive warns against traveling when one is feeling fatigued. It says before going on a long trip, it is important to get enough sleep and avoid eating heavy foods or consuming any alcohol during your trip.
Some of the signs that can show that you are feeling fatigued include; yawning, daydreaming, wandering over the centre line or on to the edge of the road, feeling your reactions slowing down, or when you feel stiff and your eyes feel heavy.
After ensuring that you are fit for the road, the next step is to plan your route, as well as refuelling, rests and overnight stops.
Arrive Alive has given the following guide to help you check your car:
The first step is to check your car's roadworthiness by examining the headlights, indicators, stop lights, tail-lights, windscreen wiper blades, mirrors, brakes, steering, tyres, tyre pressures, exhaust system, and possible oil or fuel leaks.
'Check coolant, fluids and oil levels. Check that the spare wheel is in good condition and properly inflated. Make sure that you have a serviceable jack and wheel brace. Ensure any luggage or cargo is put in the boot or secured in the vehicle,' states Arrive Alive.
