Five South African women breaking boundaries
We celebrate International Women’s Day by looking at the women who are impacting the world in a positive way.
March 8 marks International Women’s Day. The day started many years ago in 1911. Its aim is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
Let’s look at South African women who are making a mark on the world.
Sho Madjozi
Limpopo-born rapper Sho Madjozi is a multi-award-winning artist who has made a name for herself internationally.
She has bagged a couple of international award nominations.
In May 2020, Madjozi headline the Africa Day virtual concert. Another highlight was when she got signed under Epic Records US.
She won the BET 'Best Newcomer' award in 2019.
She was also nominated for the 'Best International Act' category at the BET awards in 2020.
One of her biggest highlights was when she appeared on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' and got to meet legendary wrestling star, John Cena.
This month, Madjozi featured on an Apple Music billboard in Times Square, New York.
Madjozi celebrated International Women's Day by celebrating the fact that she is on the cover of international magazine Moziak for this month.
"My cover and spread for @moziakafrica on International Women’s Day!! Iconic or what??," she wrote on Instagram.
Connie Ferguson
Connie Ferguson has taken the film industry by storm.
Not only is she an iconic actress, but she is responsible for some of the most popular and loved content on South African television.
Her company, which she runs with her husband Shaun, 'The Ferguson Films' is responsible for producing shows such as ‘Rockville’, ‘iGazi’, ‘The Gift’, ‘The Throne’, ‘The Herd’, ‘The Queen’, ‘The River’, ‘Kings of Joburg’, and 'The Imposter'.
Some of the shows they have produced have bagged awards.
Bonang Matheba
Queen B, as she is fondly called by many, is dynamite. The award-winning media personality is not only amazing at her craft, but she has a heart of gold.
The TV and Radio personality has been helping the less privileged to better their future by funding their education.
Nomzamo Mbatha
South Africa's golden girl, Nomzamo Mbatha, is also flying the South African flag high.
Not only is she an actress in ‘Coming 2 America’, but she recently appeared on popular US talk show, 'The Real'.
She has also been an MC at two big international events - the BET Awards International and Essence Festival New Orleans.
Basetsana Kumalo
Former Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo, is a force to be reckoned with.
She is a South African TV personality, beauty pageant titleholder, businesswoman, and philanthropist.
She founded the Romeo and Basetsana Kumalo Foundation to help the less-privileged.
The South African businesswoman has received a special award from Operation Hunger, the Cancer Association of South Africa, and the RDP (Reconstruction and Development Programme).
