How to make Mother’s Day special on a low budget
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Strapped for cash this Mother’s Day? These tips will help make the day amazing regardless.
Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year. It’s the one-day moms get to sit back and relax without worrying about everyone and everything.
It’s her day to be spoiled rotten.
But treating your mother on this special day is not always budget-friendly.
Just about every store has beautifully packaged, expensive Mother’s Day gifts on display to make your broke-self feel guilty about not being able to get something.
But, not all is lost. Here’s a look at how you can still spoil your mom with a low budget and without breaking the bank.
Breakfast in bed with a twist
Don’t underestimate the value of a good homecooked breakfast. Moms spend just about every day cooking for their families, so they will appreciate not having to slave away over a hot stove. The best part about this Mother’s Day idea is that you can probably find all the ingredients in your kitchen cupboard. But a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice is not going to cut it. Put some effort into it and make your own pancakes or put a twist on common breakfast foods like bacon and eggs. Watch the video to find out how you can make bacon in egg baskets and strawberry shortcake pancakes.
Scrapbook of memories
Moms love than reminiscing about childhood memories. Secretly collect some of your family’s favourite pictures over the years, make copies and turn them into a special scrapbook or album. The family can take a trip down memory lane on Mother’s Day by looking through the revamped album.
Clean the house
If your mother’s favourite saying is “cleanliness is next to Godliness” then she will appreciate you cleaning the house for her. Cleaning can get tiring and now is as good a time as ever to take over her chores for the day. Make her a cup of tea or coffee, direct her to the sofa, turn on her favourite TV show and then get cleaning.
Wine and massage
Next to chocolate, wine is one of the fail-proof gifts you can give your mom this Mother’s Day, especially if she is a big wine fan. If you can’t get her favourite wine, get something similar that fits your budget. You can also offer to give her a massage while she sips on her wine.
Family lunch
With all of us having such busy schedules, getting the family together throughout the year can be a challenge. But Mother’s Day is the one day they will feel guilty about making an excuse. Surprise your mom with a family lunch attended by all her children – if possible. It will certainly bring a tear to her eye. You can even have a “bring and share” lunch if the budget is seriously low.
DIY gift
If all else fails, just make your mother a DIY gift or card. Do some research online and find a DIY project that fits your budget. Check out the video below for some cool ideas.
