Many of us tend to ignore the spam folder in our emails.

This is because this is the folder where most junk and scam mails go.

However, not all mails in the spam folder are actually junk mail, as seen in the case of this woman who found out that she had won the lottery through a mail that went to her spam folder.

Laura Spears, a 55-year-old from Oakland County in Michigan, found out that she won a $3-million lottery.

According to Sky News, the woman bought a Mega Millions ticket on the Michigan Lottery website for a draw on 31 December last year and matched five numbers to win $1m (£740,000), but managed to multiply her prize by three because she had paid for a "Megaplier".

The lucky woman checked her spam folder by chance, while looking for another mail. This is what led to her seeing the lottery mail.

"A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account. That's when I saw an email from the lottery saying I had won a prize," she told the publication.

"I couldn't believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my lottery account to confirm the message in the email," she added.

Spears says she was in disbelief.

"It's all still so shocking to me that I really won $3m," she added.
