Keeping your pets safe during a heatwave
Updated | By Poelano Malema
The heat can pose problems for pets. Here is how to ensure you protect them from the dire effects of the heat.
The heatwave does not only harm humans, but it can also cause problems for animals.
Your pets can suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
To protect them, follow the below guide:
Keep them hydrated
Pets need to get enough water to keep hydrated. Hot weather conditions can cause animals to dehydrate.
Water is essential because it carries important nutrients into and out of the cells of the body. It aids in digestion.
'Severe dehydration can be life-threatening because it can cause the organs, such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, to shut down due to decreased cardiac output and poor blood circulation throughout the body', reports PetMD.
Therefore it is advisable to offer your pets enough water and ensure they are hydrated throughout the day.

Avoid making your pets exercise in the heat
Just as humans avoid exercising in high weather conditions, so should pets.
When you exercise, you release sweat. The sweat raises the risk of dehydration which can cause several complications and feelings of weariness.

Keep them in the shade
Try to keep your pets inside the house if the conditions are cooler indoors.
If they need to be outside, then try and keep them in the shade. This will offer temporary relief from the harmful effects of the heat and avoid heat stress.
