Parts of South Africa are experiencing a heatwave.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings about the dangers of heatwaves.
'When the temperature are extremely high, humans' ability to cool their bodies through sweating is reduced. This can be a real threat that leads to hyperthermia,' reads a statement on the website.
Healthline describes hyperthermia as a condition when your temperature climbs too high and threatens your health. 'It refers to several conditions that can occur when your body’s heat-regulation system can’t handle the heat in your environment,' states the health site.
You can also experience heat stress, a condition in which your body temperature starts to climb and you’re unable to cool yourself through sweating. This can lead to heat stroke.
'In an extremely hot environment, the most serious health and safety concern is heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal if medical attention is not available immediately,' states SAWS.
