Ndawo Yakho

Ndawo Yakho, a shelter based in Gauteng, has become a haven for abused women and children in and around the province.

At the shelter, which is located in Yeoville Johannesburg, abused women and their children are given a temporary place to stay for up to six months. They are provided with food, a roof over their head, warm clothing and psychosocial support.

Not only does the shelter take care of the needs of the victims, but it offers hope for the future by offering empowerment skills to the women.

The skills include sewing and making jewellery. The victims are also taught life skills and those who are qualified and seeking employment receive assistance with job placement.

This empowerment programme has led to some of the women finding their purpose or being able to become financially independent. The shelter also assists the victims with being integrated back into their communities.
