More than 200,000 households in SA without main toilet facility

In 2023, there are still far too many South Africans living without proper toilet facilities.
South Africa has a population of 62-million people.
According to the latest census report, 88.5% of households resided in formal dwellings, 3.1% in traditional dwellings, and 8.1% in informal dwellings.
Proper sanitation continues to be a concern in the country.

According to the latest census report, thousands of South Africans are still living without proper toilet facilities.
Only 70.8% of households have toilets that flush.
Close to four-million households in South Africa still use pit toilets. These types of toilets can pose a health danger and attract flies and mosquitoes.
The stats show that 2.1% of households in South Africa use bucket toilets and 2.6% use chemical toilets.
One percent of households in South Africa use other toilet facilities, while sadly, 1.6% of households have no toilet facilities.
Speaking about the census report, President Cyril Ramaphosa said: "Census 2022 has told us where we are making progress, but it has also laid bare the challenges that remain."
