Women's Day: Honouring Jacaranda FM's phenomenal female presenters
Updated | By Poelano Malema
The 9th of August marks National Women’s Day. We commemorate the day by celebrating our phenomenal Jacaranda FM presenters.
Every year on 9 August, South Africans celebrate National Women's Day.
History was made by South African women on 9 August 1956. Thousands of women, led by Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, Lilian Ngoyi, Rahima Moosa, and Helen Joseph, marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws enforced by the apartheid government.
The laws required all black people to carry a special “pass” or identification document which they had to produce to prove they were permitted to enter a certain area designated for white people.
More than 100,000 women signed a petition which was handed over to the Prime Minister at the time, J.G. Stijdom. Today, because of the resilience of the women of 1956, all South Africans are free to walk around in any area in South Africa without having to produce identity documents.
Since 1994, every year on 9 August, the country commemorates National Women's Day.
The fight for freedom which was demonstrated in 1956 is just one of the many struggles that women have fought against and won.
Today, there has been so much done to ensure gender equality is upheld by all in the country. Millions of women are leading in different spaces, including the corporate world.
As a station, this National Women's Day, we celebrate our extraordinary presenters who continue to shine their light wherever they are.
Jacaranda FM is blessed with women who allow no limitation when it comes to excelling and making a difference in the world.
