Back in 2022, Akani Properties purchased the well-known shopping centre for a whopping R1-billion on behalf of their client, the Municipal Employees Pension Fund (MEPF). The acquisition represented a significant turning point in the Fund's investment strategy.

Formerly known as the 'Mother of the Nation', Winnie Mandela personified unshakable dedication to the struggle and fight against apartheid in South Africa, fortitude in the face of hardship and drive to elevate communities.

Akani Properties hopes to honour her vast and varied legacy by calling the shopping centre in her honour as it recognizes both her accomplishments alongside the difficulties she overcame.

"We have decided to concentrate on the wider range of Winnie Mandela’s accomplishments," said Jack Malebane, Managing Director of Akani. He went on to further elaborate that the renaming highlights the communal and familial characteristics of both leaders by drawing comparisons with other famous locations such as Nelson Mandela Square.

Akani Properties hopes to establish a network of venues that represent many facets of the Mandela legacy, such family, community, and leadership.
