Safe Space brought to you by Jacaranda FM in collaboration with PANDA

Most men don't like to talk about their problems especially to their families, friends or colleagues. For most men, the demonstration of emotion, seeking psychological or psychiatric help is considered ‘'unmanly'. Safe Space and Jacaranda FM aim to break the stigma attached to asking for help or support by empowering men with the tools offered in the Panda app.

What is Safe Space?

Most men don't like to talk about their problems, especially to their families, friends, or colleagues. For most men, the demonstration of emotion, and seeking psychological or psychiatric help is considered 'unmanly'. "Boys don't cry" is a phrase taught from a young age, and those who do cry or seek help, are often teased or bullied.

Safe Space aims to break the stigma attached to asking for help or support by empowering men with the tools offered in the Panda app.

#SafeSpace puts FREE mental, physical, and financial wellness assistance in the palm of men's hands for the second year after winning multiple awards for the unique and impactful campaign in 2022.

Jacaranda FM's aim for Men's Health Awareness Month (November) is to shed light on major male health problems focusing on mental, physical, and financial issues.

Research and Statistics

Jacaranda FM's first-party data service SoundInsights collected information that informed #SafeSpace. Data reveals that 54% of respondents want to improve their physical fitness, 51% want to work on their financial wellness, and 49% want to work on their mental health.

Just over half of the participants said that they would feel more comfortable getting help anonymously. This may be a carry-over from the stigma that is attached to seeking help, specifically mental health help.

A total of 57% of men said that they do not know where to start improving their health or said that they would need to be educated more.

80% of South Africans who need mental health support are unable to access it easily according to Cassey Chambers of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). The statistics are even more alarming when it comes to South African men.

According to the World Health Organisation, South Africa has the second highest rate of suicide among men in the world, just a fraction behind Russia.
