A new study conducted in California has found that "computer games and social media have become a sort of stand-in for physical relationships".
People are so entranced by their gadgets that they no longer make time for physical relationships.
This has led to a decline in a number of young people in the area dating or engaging in sexual activity.
Lei Lei, a sociology professor at Rutgers, told KFF Health News that "young adults increasingly form relationships through playing video games with people they do not physically meet. These distant relationships sometimes interfere with the formation of sexual relationships."
Another 2021 study at Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia based on youth aged between 17 and 29, found that 59% said social media had 'impacted their social interactions, negatively affecting family relationships and friendships while also making face-to-face communication more difficult'.
Medical News Today also stated that social media decreases quality time and relationship satisfaction.
