What it takes to write a True Crime podcast
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
Nicole Engelbrecht has changed the podcast landscape in
South Africa with her award-winning series, True Crime South Africa. She tells Jacaranda FM's Gerda de Sousa what life is like when intense research into true crime
cases becomes your morning, noon and night …..
Since she told the first true crime story in August 2019, Nicole’s True Crime South Africa series has risen to become Mzansi’s most listened true crime podcasts with more than 3 million downloads to date.
In September 2022, Nicole was honoured with the award for the best Crime podcast of the year at the Africa Podcast and Voice Awards.
With these podcasts, Nicole focuses on solved and unsolved true crime cases in South Africa, placing emphasis on the victims and survivors.
Some of the cases that Nicole revisits to give her stamp of additional research are well-known crimes that shocked the country, while others are stories that most listeners have never heard of before.
Jacaranda FM teamed up with Nicole in August to launch the highly popular True Crime South Africa – die Afrikaanse weergawe on JacPod.
These six episodes were translated into Afrikaans for this unique podcast series told by Gerda.
This season has so far had just under 50 000 downloads.
