If you reside in Johannesburg, you might have seen thousands of butterflies passing by your area. That is because it is that time of the year where butterflies migrate.

For the past couple of days, social media has been lit with many Johannesburg residents sharing pictures and videos of the brown-veined white butterflies that are all over the town.

Every mid-summer the butterflies migrate from other countries where it is winter to Johannesburg. This is so that they can ensure their survival because they are cold-blooded creatures and cannot handle the cold. They also migrate from areas where it is winter because there are no flowers, so that means there is no food for them.

In an interview with eNCA, butterfly expert Reinier Terblanche said the butterflies travel North East and there is no evidence of travelling all the way to Madagascar.

According to the expert, it is not only the white butterflies that migrate, but they are joined by the African Migrant butterflies, the orange tip butterfly, the lemon pansy butterfly, and many other types of butterflies.
