South African food blogger Landi Govender has shared an easy recipe for the decadent breakfast dish that will leave your family drooling.
"I don’t know exactly what it is that makes this crème brûlée French toast so addictive. Is it the pillowy soft brioche? The vanilla-infused custard? The crunchy brûlée’d sugar topping? Ugh, I think it’s everything," she said.
We don't know whose idea it was to combine crème brûlée and French toast into one delicious dish but our tastebuds are forever grateful.

Here's how to make this delicious crème brûlée French toast recipe:
For the custard
500ml full cream milk
1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
4 large egg yolks
100g granulated sugar
40g corn flour
30g unsalted butter
For the French toast
Butter, to fry the French toast
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
150ml full-cream milk or cream
1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4–6 thick slices of brioche
Extra granulated sugar, for the brûlée
Method
Making the custard:
- In a saucepan, add the milk and vanilla bean paste. Heat gently, but do not bring it to a boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and corn flour until the mixture is pale in colour (about 2 to 3 minutes).
- Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking to combine.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan over low heat and whisk until thickened (about 4 to 5 minutes). Once thickened, add the butter and whisk until melted and combined.
- Put the custard in a bowl and cover it with cling wrap, ensuring the cling wrap touches the surface of the custard. Chill in the fridge.
Making the French toast:
- Heat a pan over medium heat and add butter.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, milk, and cinnamon to combine.
- Dip a slice of brioche into the mixture, allowing it to soak for about 30 to 60 seconds on both sides.
- Let the excess drip off, and then place the slice in the heated pan.
- Cook until golden brown on both sides, then remove from the pan and repeat with the remaining slices.
Putting everything together:
- Place a slice of French toast onto a plate.
- Pipe or spoon custard on top and generously sprinkle sugar over the custard.
- Use a blowtorch to brûlée the sugar for about a minute until it crisps up.
- Repeat with the remaining French toast slices.
