Updated | By Poelano Malema
Give your traditional magwinya or vetkoeks a twist by adding cinnamon and jam.
Northern parts of South Africa are experiencing rainy, cold weather due to tropical storm Eloise which hit Mozambique over the weekend.
Mangwinya/vetkoek/fat cakes are a favourite for many South Africans, especially on cold or rainy days.

They are easy to make, filling, and very nice with a cup of tea or coffee.
We have come up with a delicious recipe that your whole family will love, especially those with a sweet tooth.
Ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon sugar
5 grams instant dry yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
Oil for deep frying
1 Cinnamon
Caster sugar
Jam
Method:
- Mix flour, yeast, salt and sugar.
- Add the warm water.
- Mix into a soft dough.
- Cover with an air-tight lid and put in a warm place for two hours to allow the dough to rise.
- Heat oil in a pot/pan.
- Mix the risen dough.
- Make it into balls and fry the balls in the hot oil. (Turn to ensure the vetkoek is golden brown on all sides).
- Slice the vetkoek into half.
- Spread with jam
- Sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon in the centre. Cinnamon is a strong spice, so sprinkle just a little bit.
- Add caster sugar. The amount you sprinkle will depend on how sweet you want your vetkoek to be.
Enjoy!
